Welcome to Drawn To Build! I'm Will.
I'm a general contractor and home builder from Wisconsin who has spent thousands of hours designing homes, managing their construction, and working hands-on to bring them to life.
Over the years, I've learned that great homes don't happen by accident. They're the result of thoughtful decisions made long before the first wall is framed.
That's what inspired Drawn To Build: helping homeowners think through those decisions early, when small adjustments on paper can make a big difference in the finished home.
I created this business to help homeowners benefit from both perspectives—the creativity of design and the practicality of real-world construction.
Whether you're starting from scratch, reviewing an existing plan, or refining a design you've already fallen in love with, my goal is simple:
Create homes that are beautiful, functional, and genuinely enjoyable to build and live in.
One of the many custom homes I've had the privilege to build.
What Makes a Home Work
Some homes photograph beautifully. Some homes live beautifully. The best homes do both.
I genuinely enjoy thinking through the small details that make a home more functional, efficient, and enjoyable to live in. These are often the things homeowners don’t notice until after they move in, but they’re often the details that make the biggest difference.
Here are some of those details I enjoy thinking about when designing, reviewing, and improving home plans:
Hallway Widths — "Will two people carrying laundry baskets be able to pass comfortably here?"
Traffic Flow — "Will people naturally move through the house, or constantly cut through rooms?"
Door Swings & Sizes — "Will this door help the room or declare war on your furniture?"
Room Relationships — "Are the right rooms close together—and the noisy ones far enough apart?"
Window Size & Placement — "What will you actually see when you look out this window?"
Symmetry (or Asymmetry if Needed) — "Does this feel intentional or just slightly off?"
Exterior Balance — "Does the house look good from the curb, even if you can't explain why?"
Ceiling Details — "Will the ceiling make the room feel special or just taller?"
Efficient Bumpouts — "Is this bumpout adding value or just adding cost?"
Roof Complexity — "Will this roof add character, or just add cost and future maintenance?"
Structural Simplicity — "Can this be built efficiently without unnecessary engineering?"
Budget-Conscious Upgrades — "What's the best place to spend—and save—your money?"
Can a Sectional Actually Fit? — "Will your sectional fit without becoming the whole room?"
Can a King Bed Fit Properly? — "Will a king bed fit comfortably, not just technically?"
Is There Room for Nightstands? — "Can you reach your phone and lamp without squeezing through a gap?"
Does Furniture Block Windows? — "Will furniture placement force you to apologize to a perfectly good window?"
Morning vs Afternoon Light — "Will this room have direct sunlight when you actually use it?"
Window Orientation — "Are the windows capturing the best light or missing it?"
Seasonal Sunlight — "How will this room feel in December versus July?"
Avoiding Dark Hallways — "Will you need to turn lights on in the middle of the day?"
Pantry Size — "Will this pantry still feel big enough after one Costco trip?"
Linen Storage — "Where do the towels, sheets, and extras actually go?"
Coat Storage — "What happens when guests show up in winter?"
Everyday Clutter Management — "Where do backpacks, mail, chargers, and shoes land?"
Deck Materials — "Will you still love this deck after ten years of maintenance?"
Flooring Selections — "How will this floor look after kids, pets, and daily life?"
Exterior Siding Choices — "Will this exterior age well or become a headache?"
Maintenance Requirements — "How much upkeep are you signing up for?"
Decisions Inside That Affect the Exterior — "Will this interior choice create an awkward exterior spot?"
Decisions Outside That Affect the Interior — "Will this exterior feature make the room harder to use?"
Features That Look Expensive But Aren't — "Where can you create a custom look without a custom budget?"
Features That Cost More Than Most People Expect — "Is this detail worth the investment once you know the real cost?"
